According to Variety, Sony has begun developing a remake of the 1972 cult blaxploitation hit Super Fly. The original was directed by Gordon Parks Jr.; who is the he son of Gordon Parks, who directed blaxploitation classic “Shaft.”
The remake is being penned by “Watchmen” scribe Alex Tse. The original film starred Ron O’Neal as Youngblood Priest, a cocaine dealer who is trying to quit the underworld drug business, but looking to score one more super deal.
The film is also known for its accompanying soundtrack which also served as the third studio album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield. Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
O’Neal reprised his role as Youngblood Priest and directed the film’s sequel Super Fly T.N.T. that was released in 1973.
