Atlanta is typically known for creating R&B and Southern Hip-Hop mega acts such as Usher, Outkast and Ludacris, but unbeknownst to many there is a whole other side of music waiting to be discovered. Hoping to aid the country and eventually the world in finding out about this hidden music are The Well Reds. They are a rock band composed of Jeremy – Lead Vocals, keys, guitar; Sean Crawford – Guitars, Vocals, programing; Torin Degnats – Drums, programming and Rex Crawford – Bass Guitar. They’re a unique group of friends, who’s name comes from their love of reading and very real struggle with their love for the color red.
What started out as a solo project for Jeremy in 2008 has turned into what can only be described by the band as a family. After playing together for a while it became apparent that they had special chemistry and decided to go all in. Right out of the gate they had the chance to record with producers renowned producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount (Mayday Parade, The Ready Set, Cartel) on their first EP “Violet. Described by Mixtape Atlanta as having “a distinctive sound”, the band sees themselves as a, “collective of writers with each person bringing something different to the table”. The Well Red stated, “our music focuses on thoughtful lyrics packaged in feel good hooks and strong musicianship as we draw from our collective experiences and are always hoping that we connect with people on a personal level in some way.” Being from a musical Mecca as influential as Atlanta, they have found inspiration from many places stating, “Each of us has different artists who’ve been heavily influenced by ranging from Hip Hop, RnB, Jazz, to 90’s Alt Rock, Muse, and Mute Math. We each bring a different perspective that has helped to shape our collective personality.” Connecting with their fans has been one of the driving forces behind their success.
Referring to those who appreciate their music as “Friends and not fans”, The Well Reds, try to be as personable as possible and get to know their fans by spending time with them no matter how big the fan base gets. It is humbling to the band to have such amazing fans that respond so positively to their music as they’ve had folks say that, “They listened to the album on repeat for days, or that a song brought them to tears.” Along with they’ve had people gift their entire album to all of their friends on iTunes. The same support fans give to the band; they try to give back during their performances by crafting events and experiences for fans where they can see, and feel the music in some way through the use of an LED curtain, light up drums, other effects and sing alongs. Since their inception in 2008, The Well Reds have gone through quite a bit and gained a lot of perspective from their experiences.
Traveling is always challenging as they’re in a close environment for days, but for the most part they have become adjusted to the circumstances and take pretty good care of each other. The most rewarding things for the band has been the people they’ve met along the way, such as Steve Lillywhite (producer: U2, The Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars) who was a guest judge for a new show called The Panel that was in the works. Jeremy got to meet him and he can’t express how enriching it was to meet one his idols and got to perform and talk with him briefly. Even with all their travels and hard work, The Well Reds understand that there is still a lot to be done. Jeremy observes that for the Atlanta rock scene to get more recognition, “It will be a product of hard work, diligence, and small successes. The work is really in the mundane not the exceptional. Sticking to small tasks and thinking little is hard, but, when you do, you’ll eventually see results.” Always thinking long term, The Well Reds continue to pursue the dreams they set out to achieve when they first formed.
Like most bands who want to be an international success, The Well Reds are no different. They want to go as far for as long as they can and make as many albums as possible and when it is all said and done they hope people have been inspired and touched by their music in some way. With 2016 upon us, The Well Reds are working on new music with the intention of releasing a single in the upcoming months, continuing to travel doing shows while reworking parts of their performances and just seeing what the future holds.
