Though a cappella has seen a rise in popularity in the last few years due in part to films such as Pitch Perfect, many times it flies under the radar of mass media and the masses in general. A Cappella brings with it an unparalleled approach to music. Bringing their own style to a cappella is The Exchange. The Exchange is a vocal pop band comprised of Alfredo Austin, Christopher Diaz, Jamal Moore, Aaron Sperber and Richard Steighner. Though they have traveled the world including London and Hong Kong, one thing has remained consistent. The Exchange is of the belief, “Music is a universal language that can bring a smile and pull emotion out of anyone.”
The group is founded on the idea that music can connect people from vast landscapes and cultures. Giving back through education and embracing every occurrence as a learning opportunity is of the utmost importance to them. Whether it is going on their “5 month ‘Get Ready’ tour spanning Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America, to their tour supporting the Backstreet Boys, to the Sing-Off,” they have evolved from all these experiences. Matt Lukasiewicz (The Exchange’s Co-Manager) stated, “I think our experiences have fine tuned our stage presence and taught us what real professionalism is.” The Exchange works with American Voices on an educational outreach program that allows them to connect with children to share how powerful and incredibly healing a tool, music can be.
The Exchange was recently honored by their a cappella peers. They were nominated for for 6 Contemporary Acappella Recording Awards. Many describe the CARAs as “The Grammys of Contemporary a cappella music.” Matthew mentioned, “This is a great way to kind of honor and acknowledge the hard work and high levels of vocal and production talent in the A Cappella community.” Whether they are performing in the U.S. or around the world their end goal has always remained constant. They want to have people leave their shows with a smile and a full heart. Each night they perform is a chance to expand a crowd’s horizon on a cappella music. Regardless if it’s a crowd that gets a cappella right away by clapping to the beat, standing up and dancing along or those that start off reserved and shy. The Exchange is currently on tour with stops in Georgia (the country, not the US State), Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. During their time on the road, the group plans to continue with their music education outreach program while routinely putting out awesome videos on YouTube and new music.
