What are some of the adjectives you would use to describe yourself?
Summer Azul: Well as an entertainer, I describe myself as hot, eccentric, and intriguing. The reason is because through my performance as an artist I take originality as well as inspiration from others to the next level by incorporating a wide variety of styles and sounds which keep people wanting to see and hear more. I have been told that everything from my tone of voice to the way I move my body is said to be alluring without effort. So I accept that as a part of me and use it alongside my musical talents to make certain that I am sultry fresh and original.
What was it that sparked your interest as a child to want to be an entertainer? When did you decide to turn it from simply an interest to a career?
Summer Azul: As a child I was exposed to a variety of old school music as well as classic movies (Black and Whites) and while watching these musicians and actors I became curious as to how they were able to entertain millions of people and I was fascinated by their talent. I started to ask my grandmother questions about actresses and singers like Marilyn Monroe and Mahalia Jackson. She explained to me how they were once little girls just like me and they grew up to become stars because of the talent they were blessed with and their determination. ”It was their destiny.” she explained. and so with that, I decided that I wanted the same for myself around the age of 5.
You say you are “bringing a new flavor to the rap game”, but what exactly do you mean by that claim?
Summer Azul Well the new flavor is simply Summer Azul… natural femininity, sex appeal and raw talent. I’m an artist with something to bring to the table in the world of music. My style, my voice, and my story is unique. I have been through things you can’t even imagine and because of it I am able to express that in my music which means that I contribute something of substance to the Hip Hop world.
To be in a primarily male dominated genre and from a city known for producing male rap artist, what has it meant to you to be able to generate such success and respect?
Summer Azul: It means a lot to me to generate the success and respect I receive here. Its a huge force for me in my journey! Being a female in the rap game is hard regardless because you have to really work hard to prove yourself as a serious artist, so for me to earn that respect in cities like Atlanta and NY motivates me to keep going and become even better.
Who were some of the MCs that you grew up admiring and what was it about them you admired and possibly learned?
Summer Azul: I love so many artist for so many different reasons but I would definitely have to say artist like Slick Rick, MC Smooth and Dana Dane as far as old school rap. I admired them for having their own unique voices. Of course Eve, Foxy Brown and Lil Kim are women I admired for bringing sex appeal with a gangsta style. Out of every artist Tupac is the person I learned something from. He taught me that I can get through the hardships in my life and that I can rap about my pain to ease someone else going through troubled times the same way he did for me with his music!
Your music has been described as hardcore hip-hop with some rock and Spanish, but how would you term or describe your sound?
Summer Azul: My style is a mixture of all the music I love. The lyrics are hardcore and the music always switches from rock to hop hop to even an R&B flavor and I tend to toss some Spanish around here and there so I guess its a gumbo of genres!!! It’s the New Flavor.. Summer Azul! Something real and interesting blended with something Sexy!
What are some of the experiences that have shaped your music?
Summer Azul: Being involved in Life or Death situations where I almost died or times that I was facing time in jail made me stronger and gave me the motivation that I needed to change my life and become the entertainer I always wanted to be. Plus, going through years of having to prove that I am serious about my career to people also helped me to become a better artist. I literally had to write and perform like there was no tomorrow because I knew that if I gave up on myself others weren’t going to make sure that I kept trying. So basically the lack of faith in others motivated me to perfect my craft.
Aside from music, you are also an actress and how did you get involved in that? What have been your favorite memories thus far involving acting?
Summer Azul:I love acting just as much as I love music. It’s like having a wife and a girlfriend . I want them both for different reasons. I always rapped even as early as a toddler, but I never had an outlet for acting so I got involved by going to school for acting and then I started auditioning for plays and films and I kept getting part after part. I love every moment of being another person or “Acting” crazy and people enjoying it! I believe my favorite memory is still to come.
What motivates you to be able to do so many things and where do you find the time for all your activities?
Summer Azul: I know what I want, and I also know how much time, effort and energy it takes to get what I want so having goals keeps me motivated. I can’t stop until I get to where I’m headed, and even once I get there I wont be able to stand still! My life is entertainment so there is no such thing as finding the time…. I make the time!
