There are times when certain genres and styles of music dominated the charts. There was a period from 1935 to 1946 when swing music was the most listened to thing in America. The 90s through early 2000s saw Teen pop command Billboard with the likes of Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera. When most styles are no longer in favor rarely do they make a huge comeback. There was an era not too long ago when female groups prevailed over most other music acts. Leading the charge on female empowerment, independence, and self-sureness were acts like The Bangles, Salt-N-Pepa, TLC and Destiny’s Child. These ladies were the definition of “girl power”.
Female groups seem to be nonexistent in recent years. A new group may pop up every few years; put out a few single and garner some media attention, but rarely does it last longer than a few years at the moment. Many are working to change that situation including Kelly Rowland developing June’s Diary through her BET reality series Chasing Destiny. Atlanta is a one of the countries major music destinations. Atlanta has produced some of history’s most respected girl groups including Xscape and TLC. So it’s only right that the upswing in the focus on female vocal groups is heavily centered in The A.
Havok Jones is a trio based out of Atlanta. Neiko, Kea Aleis, & MaiDai are described as, “three voices with their own very unique tones coming together to create one sound”. The group was formed by creator and vocal coach Ms. Queen Washington on the “principles of live vocal ability.” Ms. Queen Washington came up with the Havok Jones name in 2012 when she formed the group.
“Similar to the cliché, Keeping up with the Jones, instead of keeping up with them’, we wreak havoc on them” said Havok Jones. The ladies credit their hometown heroes for their relatable, quality sound including TLC and Xscape. Havok Jones is consistently working to put out material including their own original material or doing covers. They especially enjoy getting suggestions from their fans.
