In October it was announced that Netflix and New Line were developing a sequel to the 2000 hit film Shaft. When news broke it was announced that Samuel L. Jackson would reprise his role as John Shaft while Jessie T. Usher. would play his son.
Tim Story is set to direct a script penned by Kenya Barris. The sequel follows Usher’s character, who plays a young cyber expert FBI agent who despite being estranged from his father, is forced to work with him on a case.
Today (12/11) Variety reported that Regina Hall has joined the cast playing a former love interest of John Shaft and the younger Shaft’s mother.
The original Shaft, Richard Roundtree will reprise his role and production will begin in December.
The 2000 film was a success receiving generally favorable reviews and opening at the number-one position at the box office when it debuted. The film grossed $107,196,498 worldwide, against a $46 million budget
The movie is set to be released on June 14, 2019.
Earlier reports stated Netflix had acquired “the international rights and the ability to put the film on its streaming service outside the U.S. two weeks after New Line releases theatrically in the United States.”
