Variety exclusively learned that NBA Superstar LeBron James and his production company, SpringHill Entertainment are partnering with Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer for a limited series about entrepreneur and social activist Madam C.J. Walker. James is exec producing along with his production partner Maverick Carter. The series will mark the first scripted drama for SpringHill Entertainment.
Spencer is attached to star in the series which based on the the book “On Her Own Ground” by A’Lelia Bundles, Walker’s granddaughter, who will also serve as a consultant on the series. Madam C. J. Walker in her lifetime became known as “one of the wealthiest African American women in the country, “the world’s most successful female entrepreneur of her time,” and one of the most successful African-American business owners ever”.
Madam C.J. Walker amassed her fortune by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for black women through Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. Walker was also known for her philanthropy and activism. She made financial donations to numerous organizations and became a patron of the arts.
“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” James said. “Every American should all know the story of Madam C.J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”
Sources tell Variety that Netflix is interested in the series and is the likely destination though the streaming giant had no comment on their involvement in the project when asked.
