From Vibe: Michael Che makes history as it was announced that he had been promoted to a head writer on SNL alongside “Weekend Update”‘s Colin Jost, Bryan Tucker and Kent Sublette. With the news, Che becomes the first black person to serve as head writer in the show’s 42-year history. Former head writers for SNL include Tina Fey and Seth Meyers.
Che joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 2013, at first as a guest writer and soon after as a regular writer. On September 11, 2014, he was named to take over for Cecily Strong as the Weekend Update anchor for the 40th season. He became the first African-American co-anchor in the history of Weekend Update. During his third season, Che was promoted to the main cast.
This is the second time during the current season that a person of color has made history. On Nov. 11th comedian Tiffany Haddish hosted making her the first black Female comedian to host.
