Hailing from Sydney, Australia, singer/songwriting brother duo, Marvell just released their single, “I Remember” off their self-titled debut EP. Marvell is comprised of brothers, Max and Tom Marvell. The track speaks of remembering those past experiences you cherished with a former love, “I remember when you used to call me, how you used to hold me.” It’s about looking back at the memories you once shared with a person that brought you the deepest joy and meaning. The song is one that everyone can relate to; trying to fight the pain of no longer being able to enjoy the pleasure you previously had with someone, but all you have left are memories. “I Remember” is an acoustic indie track much in the same vein of Mumford and Sons’ “I Will Wait”. The track has a very similar chord progression and tone.
Max was kind enough to answer a few questions for Colosseum Media in a short Q&A discussing how they developed their sound, what fans can expect from the band and much more.
You describe how you’re able to jump genres in a single bound, can you elaborate on the meaning behind the statement?
What we mean by this is, our musical influences spread far and wide and this really shows through our music, with different genres shining through in every song we have written and will continue to create. Our songs are stories to us and certain genres give us the emotional influence to really embrace this, such as rock / blues and roots to pop. We feel it’s something different and unique, and give us the freedom to really express ourselves with no boundaries
For those just discovering Marvell, how do you describe your sound and what you’re about as a group?
In our mind that is such a complex question, we write the majority of our songs together with an acoustic guitar and vocals really take the lead, so a lot of the time we don’t know where we are going to end up in terms of sound from a production point of view. We aim to have catchy melodies and great vocal hooks, Rock pop is our solid foundation and then sometimes we get a little more creative. Our main goal is to play music we love, music we want to share and music for ALL to enjoy.
Why did you decide to form a group together? Do you come from a musical background such as your family and upbringing?
Being brothers, we were always surrounded by music from an early age. Mum and Dad would always be blaring music around the house so I guess we just caught the bug! As we grew older we both learnt various instruments; drums, bass, keys, guitar and the dreaded recorder! After leaving school and after a few years of work, both of us decided to quit our jobs and try make a life doing what we both clearly love and spend all our down time doing. So we created “Marvell”, which we feel was always just meant to be.
As you just released the single, “I Remember” off your debut EP, what can fans look forward to and expect from Marvell?
After the EP comes out we plan to do a lot more touring. We like meeting people who love our music, so now that we are out of the studio we are really excited to get on the road. Our shows will be a combination of us as a duo and others with our band. As far as releases go, so far fans have only heard “I Remember” but we think when they hear the whole EP they’ll see the range of our musical influences.
What is a fun fact that people would be surprised to know about Marvell?
Not that it is all that fun, but I (Max) trained as a chef and Tom became a qualified carpenter. We both really enjoy having these skills and still love getting our hands dirty!
How has each of you having your own unique musical influences aided in helping you create your sound?
(Tom) with my voice being more raw and explosive due to influences such as Cold Chisel, INXS, Jim Morrison and Max’s softer more say polished vocals from influences such as John Mayer, Allen Stone, Paul Simon together allow us to create a unique blend of old and new aged music, with certain songs taking a stronger play in either of our strengths.
