Reported by Variety; Hulu aims to tap into retro-TV nostalgia by creating their own ‘TGIF’ type block of programming on their platform. It would be modeled after the prime time television programming block that aired on ABC initially from 1989 to 2000.
Hulu has licensed all the episodes of Full House, Family Matters, Step By Step, Perfect Strangers and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. “The streaming giant plans to promote the shows as a block to promote multigenerational viewing, as well as to introduce the shows to younger audiences.” This all comes on the heels of Netflix having found success with their revival of Full House last year known as Fuller House. The show served as a sequel/continuation of the original series bringing together most of the original series ensemble cast. The shows will become available on Hulu on Sept. 29.
ABC’s branded “TGIF” found success with a blend of G-rated family- and youth-focused comedies that have become pop culture touchstones including Webster, Boy Meets World & Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The deal for more than 800 episodes of “TGIF” sitcoms has been dubbed internally as “TGIH” (H for Hulu).
