A green-eyed siren with striking looks and a rich-soulful R&B and Hip-Hop sound that will leave you yearning for more, are only a few of the terms used to describe Detroit based artist, Erica Paige. Don’t let the good looks fool you though. Much like her city, Erica Paige is full of pride, knowledge, and of the underdog spirit with a determination to leave her mark on the industry.
Erica Paige takes after her dad as she began singing at age 4 and used to watch him play the guitar while performing around the house. She describes, “My most vivid memories are those involving preschool plays as they opened up my little mind to other artist whom I knew nothing about and fell in love with performing while using my voice as a form of expression.” Along with her early experiences, Erica has found inspiration from legends such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Faith Evans. She describes how, “Aretha taught me to demand that stage presence and work with what I got. I felt Whitney whenever she sang, as though she knew this is what she was meant to do and I have always wanted that for myself while being able to do what makes me happy musically without ever loosing sight of myself and still giving the audience something that they could feel and relate to.” Growing up loving R&B and hip hop, “Faith just captured both worlds for me and it’s stuck with me ever since.” Much like her preschool experiences, Erica continues to find influence from life events. She states that, “Personal experiences and me learning as I go along life’s road gives me all the influence I need.” When she has the time to “finally just sit still and just breathe…[she] reflects on what’s been influential to [her] even if it’s just about what she’s seen that day.”
Erica’s had the chance to showcase her talents at events such as R&B Live during BET Award Week 2010, which she describes as “an opportunity that will always stand out because it was the most amazing thing to be able to perform in front of a group of talented artist that I had been listening to and admiring for years. I told myself that they will all be my peers one day and I’ll be sitting right along side of them all.” The experience left such a mark as she describes how, “The adrenaline that ran through me that night was just the most intense thing ever.” Looking at her peers, Erica is steadfast in being her own artist discussing that “my soft but strong, raspy voice will provoke audiences in wanting to hear what’s next.” Erica is set on leaving a legacy behind built on “the understanding that you can do anything in this world you want to do. You don’t have to feel like you need to conform to what others want for you if it’s not what you want for yourself. She wants people to look at her and say “she never gave up while reaching people of all walks of life through music and entertainment in all forms.”
Erica’s desire is not only to concur music, but the entertainment industry as a whole. She’s taken the time to venture into acting and looking towards learning how to play piano very soon to help her on her musical journey. With music being her first love, Erica is currently working on getting a few singles done to send out to radio and being mentored on the next steps of her career. She stated that, “I have a lot in store and as the new year progresses, you will see my brand developing in a major way!”
