Don Cheadle to Star in Biopic based on 19th Century Black Millionaire Jeremiah G. Hamilton
Via Variety: Don Cheadle will star in and produce “Prince of Darkness.” It’s an upcoming biopic based on the life of 19th Century black millionaire Jeremiah G. Hamilton. Hamilton was a Wall Street broker and noted for being “the only black millionaire in New York,” by James McCune Smith about a decade before the American Civil War.. By the time he had passed in 1875, he had amassed a fortune of $2 million ($43.6 million today).
In an era of racism and segregation, he dealt extensively in the white business world. Hamilton broke many rules during the era including marring a white woman. He owned railroad stock on trains he was not legally allowed to ride.
‘Chuck’ Trailer: Sylvester Stallone’s Inspiration for ‘Rocky’ Gets His Own Biopic
IFC Films is releasing Chuck, an biographical sports drama based on the live of Chuck Wepner. Wepner is a former boxer best known for almost going fifteen rounds with world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in a 1975 title fight and also being Sylvester Stallone’s inspiration for the Rocky films.
Shorty after watching Wepner’s fight with Ali, Stallone wrote the script to Rocky. For a while Stallone dined that Wepner and as a result, he eventually filed a lawsuit. The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. The film will hit theaters on May 5th and star Liev Schreiber as Chuck.
