Arc of Justice is based on Kevin Boyle’s 2004 book of the same name. The film is based on the true story of “a racial incident in 1925 Detroit that put African-American doctor Ossian Sweet on the stand for murder.” The grandson of a former slave, Sweet becomes a doctor and eventually leaves the ghetto and moves into aall-white middle-class neighborhood.
Sweet ultimately must defend his newly bought property against a mob of white rioters. Eventually one of the rioters is killed leads to Sweet’s arrest & trail. “Sweet and his family are persecuted by the legal system, leading to the deaths of members of Sweet’s family and the destruction of Sweet’s career as a physician.” He, his family and friends, who had helped defend his home, were acquitted by an all-white jury of murder charges in what came to be known as the Sweet Trials.
Sweet’s defense was funded by the NAACP and led by legendary lawyer Clarence Darrow. Oyeloww is most widely known for his protroyal of Martin Luther King Jr in the critical acclaimed Selma.
