With news of a ‘Coming to America’ Sequel moving forward with Jonathan Levine & Kenya Barris, fans will soon be able to eat a Big Mick & Zamunda Fries from the iconic McDowell. For those not familiar, McDowell was the fictitious restaurant from the 1988 film that was a blatant ripoff of McDonalds.
According to slashfilm.com; Eater, the Fat Sal’s Deli in Hollywood located at 1300 N. Highland Avenue will be transforming into McDowell’s on Monday, October 30 and Tuesday, October 31, 2017 from 11am to 3pm. The plan is to actually transform the exterior and interior to more closely resemble the place, while also adding a few key menu items.
McDonalds and McDowell have a bit of a misunderstanding. “McDonald’s has the Golden Arches, while McDowell’s has the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds. ”
Just my personal opinion and the marketer in me, but since they are doing a sequel to the film; I would have waited till closer to when the film comes out and tried to do a partnership with Mcdonalds. Possibly rebrand more than just one location as McDowell for a day or more. Even if it’s only a few restaurants in major cities, at least more people would be able to have the McDowell experience.
I would especially have done a few restaurants/popup shops in New York since that’s where the film and McDowell are based.
